Jeanne Toussaint was known first for her mind and creative vision, but also and above all for her impeccable taste — the famous “Toussaint taste.” These two traits inspired Louis Cartier, who invited her to design bags as early as 1920 before entrusting her with oversight of an extensive line of accessories in 1925.Known throughout Paris, she was nicknamed “La Panthère” after the strong feline, her double, and became inextricable from her Cartier vanity cases or cigarette cases adorned with panthers. And so the panther became her signature.Over time, this bond intensified, for Jeanne Toussaint was never done with the panther. Little by little, she drew closer to the animal she would eventually bring to life. At the rue de la Paix studios, when she became creative director in 1933, she imagined a new three-dimensional sculptural silhouette perched atop an emerald — a proud, powerful panther. In keeping with her image of womanhood, it was to become one of the most evocative pieces of jewelry of the 20th century.Its admirers included leading women like Daisy Fellowes and María Félix, who recognized themselves in this symbol and decided where, why, how and when to wear it. Their common denominator? Cutting-edge style, audacity, independence and taste in jewelry with character.

With titanium, we talk in grams since it’s 43% lighter and 1.5 times harder than steel. The black spinel of the winding crown and the anthracite tone of the fully microblasted matte-finish material highlight the depth of its color.With the small version, we talk in millimeters, featuring a 27 mm x 34.5 mm diameter. It also comes in gold and steel, all-steel, or all-gold. What truly distinguishes this small Santos de Cartier watch, apart from its dimensions, is the sophistication of its sunray dial and the integration of a high-autonomy quartz movement specifically adapted to its reduced volume.

The large all-steel model with its black dial represents the true spirit of adventure. Its relaxed elegance begins with the dial, which features a rail track and white hands coated in fluorescent green Super-LumiNova. This distinct aesthetic is further enhanced by the dial’s half-satin, half-sunray finish, the heptagonal crown set with a faceted blue synthetic spinel, and the satin-finished case.

First, there’s the animal. Spotted with onyx, diamonds, and openwork, its body forms a lace-like structure brought to life in three dimensions. Then, the stones: Colombian emeralds, a cascade of faceted beads in varying sizes and weights. Color intensity, fluidity, suppleness - on this iridescent surface, light ignites on every stone.

This necklace captures the essence of the snow leopard, one of the most difficult big cats to catch a sighting of. The design is clean and simplistic. With a trompe-l’oeil effect, the interplay of lines reveals the animal’s head. The stylization is based on the interweaving of geometrical motifs set with diamonds and enhanced with onyx, in a Cartier signature chromatic duo. The alternation of full and empty motifs creates an impression of movement mixed with mystery.

Everything starts from two drops with 49.37-carat Zambian emeralds, selected for their harmony and elegant volumes. Suspended as asymmetrical pendants, they’re positioned at the beginning and end of a line of emeralds and diamonds. Two pure curves are delicately connected by an X of diamonds and an adjustable clasp set on the back. The refinement of the whole piece relies on the accuracy of the lines.

<sectiontitle>The gala evenings</sectiontitle>It all began on May 27 at Artipelag, an art center in the Stockholm archipelago. Arriving by boat, the lucky guests were joined by ambassadors Deepika Padukone, Anna Sawai and Zoe Saldaña, along with Friend of the Maison Alexander Skarsgård. The event continued with a concert by Canadian rock band The Beaches and a DJ set by Dorion Fiszel. On May 31, the Maison welcomed its guests to Stockholm City Hall, a historic venue with spectacular architecture.

If you look closely at the panther, you’ll be able to see the little lines, long known as “hair” spots. Their artistry is driven by a single desire: to breathe life into the animal. The choice of stones reflects this same ambition. It entails giving the paving, at scale, a continuous appearance that emphasizes and magnifies each aspect of the animal. Attitude, gait - the diameter of the diamond must fit the panther’s musculature; everything must be legible beyond the paving, crafted so the movement remains. Polygonal onyx and sapphire spots set the pace. The technical jewelry-making challenge is to gather them, arrange them, and cut them by hand one by one to give them more life. They should be larger on the more prominent parts of the animal, such as the back, and smaller on the flanks, disappearing altogether on the white belly. Their arrangement follows a precise order that takes into account the distance between them and the number of diamonds separating them. Moving one means moving them all. One panther can take more than a year to complete. And therein lies its humanity and elegance.

True alchemists, they enhance materials and shapes to create or reinvent exceptional watches, making them precious objects. All the creations displayed represented the culmination of continuous evolution. This singular vision was reflected in the stand’s architecture, which invited visitors to explore the boundary between visible and invisible. Right from the entrance, suspended light installations dazzled on large reflective panels, creating the impression of an evolving metamorphosis. The space was made up of a succession of alcoves featuring display cases dedicated to each creation. Like true jewelry boxes, these cases combined light, texture, form, and movement to illustrate the creative power of metamorphosis. A continuously projected film depicted the passage of time: the alternation between day and night, changes in the sky and in water as the hours pass, and the transformation of a growing tree - all symbols of evolution and the circle of life.

In combination with the fur setting, this detail is a true Cartier signature. <sectiontitle>Two-part sculpture</sectiontitle>The sculpting work begins using a type of modeling clay, plastiline, and is finished with green wax. You have to be careful not to take too much off - there’s no going back. The collaboration between sculptor and designer is decisive: the animal comes to life while the material is refined.

For Cartier designers, drawing the Panther is second nature. Throughout their careers, they have drawn the animal countless times, depicting it in all its postures. Like Jeanne Toussaint and Pierre Lemarchand, they regularly visit the Muséum d’Histoire Naturelle or the Jardin des Plantes in Paris to sketch the animal up-close, bringing its essence to the page with lifelike precision.

Here, wilderness is truly precious: tigers roam and rest, giraffe scan the horizon, crocodiles play, and a snake waits, with grace, to strike. Some unexpected encounters find the Panther face to face with a zebra, or even herself – a powerful theme of hybridization and mirroring is explored through bold creations with generous volumes and sculptural presence. Wilder still - the chimeras and magical fauna. In this universe, anything is possible, and dragons share space with mystical creatures and abstract incarnations that emerge from the Maison’s imagination.

The creation of this zoological universe requires a multifaceted, specialized savoir-faire. A tiger stretches to form a necklace and calls upon Cartier’s jewelry expertise to create a powerful vitality: the organic nuances of the coat are captured in yellow, orange, brown, and white diamonds, with uniquely shaped onyx stripes; the art of sculpture brings life to volume with fine features; the vivid emerald eyes shine; and a meticulously articulated paw lays confidently on the skin. A mastery of sculpture and articulation are the twin sources of life for a magnificent crocodile necklace. The spirit and physicality of the animal is recreated meticulously in plasticine and then wax, before the lost-wax casting technique creates precious metal versions section by section to ensure a movement that is fluid and lifelike in the final creation. With tactile reverse-set diamonds that mimic the scales of a crocodile, it hugs the neck in a careful embrace.

Dedicated spaces and programs have been established for the transmission and innovation of these skills by masters of the craft. At the Maison des Métiers d’Art in the heart of Switzerland, Cartier is dedicated to preserving rare, ancestral areas of savoir-faire through the creation of exceptional and unique works of creativity, and horological artworks in particular.

To create this Panthère watch, these artisans turned their attention – and their skills – to the Panther, bringing the emblematic animal to life in black lacquered mother-of-pearl as she emerges from a precious gold-leaf layered jungle. As the only major jeweler to have an in-house glyptics workshop, the Maison also uses this ancient art of carving semi-precious stones to create magnificent fauna creations. Right in the heart of Paris, a team of just four glypticians supervised by the Head of the Atelier Émilie Marques create pieces rich with emotion. From two pieces of petrified wood, they liberated a duo of panthers to guard a superb 6.89-carat oval-shaped pink tourmaline in the Panthère Aegis ring.

Cartier’s wild fauna has always called to individuals with a strong character and a free spirit: their magnetism draws them together. Heiress and philanthropist Barbara Hutton chose a languid tiger brooch for her son’s wedding, while Mexican actress María Félix embraced the sinuous, sensual animals. She made special orders with the Maison for an articulated snake necklace, as well as a mischievous duo of crocodiles that could be worn connected as a necklace or individually as brooches. Legend has it she came to the boutique at 13 rue de la Paix with a baby crocodile for the designers to use as inspiration. The necklace was later worn by another hypnotic actress, Monica Bellucci, who reclaimed the unbridled glamour of the creation on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival in 2006. The affinity between the Maison’s exceptional ambassadors and its wild fauna is part of a living legacy. Among those who have showcased these compelling creations on the red carpet, Elle Fanning chose a bold giraffe-zebra hybrid from the Indomptables de Cartier collection for the Cannes International Film Festival in 2023, while Zoe Saldaña wore an ensemble of glittering tigers at the 2025 César awards in Paris.

In 1948, Jeanne Toussaint gave a three-dimensional body to the Panther with an emerald cabochon brooch commissioned for the Duchess of Windsor; the following year, the Duchess acquired a second brooch, this time in platinum, paved with sapphires, with the Panther sitting atop an extraordinary 152.35-carat sapphire cabochon. A building open to all disciplines

It consists of solo exhibitions and thematic ensembles around which the Fondation Cartier’s artistic commitments are articulated - architecture, living worlds, technology and science are displayed through emblematic works and portions of landmark exhibitions that have shaped the institution’s history.

<smalltitle>That’s how architect Jean Nouvel imagined it when asked by the Fondation Cartier to transform a building dating from the mid-19th century. This project, carried out in the Haussmann building that once housed the former Grands Magasins du Louvre, was conceived as a modular scenographic tool entirely open to the city thanks to its large bay windows.</smalltitle>

Comprising five mobile platforms, its dynamic architecture reimagines the possibilities of exhibition-making. Retractable ceilings allow natural light to be regulated, and mechanical railings offer the possibility of adding or removing viewpoints of the immediate urban environment. The first exhibition to be presented in the new building in October, the Exposition Générale, will display the Fondation Cartier’s artistic identity and heritage through nearly 600 works by over 100 artists who have participated in its program from 1984 to the present day.

The journey began at the entrance to the Women’s Pavilion with its façade, designed by renowned Japanese architect Yuko Nagayama and inspired by the Kumiko technique. Unveiled in the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, this entrance is a link between the two global exhibitions and reflects the Women’s Pavilion’s mission to create a lasting legacy. This gateway invited visitors to set foot into a living, evolving narrative of personal stories, global challenges and collective aspirations. Conceived by renowned contemporary artist and artistic director of the Women’s Pavilion, Es Devlin, the exhibition offered a glimpse of life through the eyes of three exceptional women from three different continents. At the entrance to the Women’s Pavilion, the first of the experiences on offer, Your Name, invited visitors to provide the Pavilion with their name. This simple act symbolized the spirit of connection and common purpose at the heart of the Women’s Pavilion experience. The tour began with Three Women, a short film created by Es Devlin and director Naomi Kawase that amplifies the voices of three remarkable women committed to changing the world. At the end of the screening, the film gave way to Three Pathways, which featured three oval openings corresponding to the three protagonists.

Equipped with headphones, visitors were guided by the voices of the three women into an open-air room dedicated to contemplation, the name of which—Ma—means “pause” or “interval.” Once this moment of calm and introspection had passed, the story took on a more factual dimension with Puzzle Box, a series of meticulously designed spaces inspired by Japanese tradition. Like a jigsaw puzzle with movable “pieces” to be arranged, these spaces featured animations relating to equality between men and women and how far we still have to go. Data collected by UN Women (the UN entity dedicated to gender equality and women’s empowerment) and detailed in the Focus on Gender Equality 2024* provided an overview of the progress made and the challenges ahead. The journey culminated with Your Hand, where, combining personal stories with powerful speeches, women demonstrated how they were committed to making women’s voices heard and improving their living conditions all over the world on a daily basis. The second floor of the Women’s Pavilion featured an immersive artistic exploration guided by Mélanie Laurent, whose work touches on themes of nature, emotion, and the quest for equity. *UN Women and UN DESA. 2024. Whispers on Leaves, a joint creation by the French director and Hiro Chiba, combined digital photography and chlorography—a unique technique used by the Japanese artist which introduces chlorophyll into the image. These delicate yet powerful artworks fused feminine forms with natural elements within a soundscape composed by Mélanie Laurent, enveloping visitors in an immersive experience. These encounters in the Women’s Pavilion acted as a powerful reminder of the interdependence that exists between all human beings, and of the transformative potential of everyday actions. With the success of the first Women’s Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, Cartier has proudly reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to women.

<sectiontitle>What inspired you to create Panthera’s Furs For Life Project?</sectiontitle> We first realized the enormity of the threat of illegally traded skins when we were working in Northern KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, focusing on the leopard hunting industry. Our team was invited to a gathering of the Shembe, a Nazareth Baptist Church faction, where we saw large quantities of authentic leopard fur being worn by dancers, and some skins even offered for sale. This triggered the journey that ultimately led to the Furs for Life program and the creation of synthetic Heritage Furs. <sectiontitle>How do you approach communities, ensuring respect for their traditions?</sectiontitle> A key step is to first introduce the Heritage Furs to the leadership of a tribe, culture or religion, sharing positive feedback of other groups who already participate in the program and securing their support before approaching the broader community. We do not seek to financially benefit from the manufacture or sale of the Heritage Furs, but rather want to support local traders and tailors who are already supplying the illegal furs. These strategies have already been used with the Shembe, Lozi and African Congregational Church, where 40 tailors have been trained. <sectiontitle>What was the process for developing the synthetic skins?</sectiontitle> First, we photographed confiscated authentic leopard skins, which were then digitized to the pixel requirements for the jacquard knitting machines used to produce the fur-like fabric. The digitization process alone took several weeks, as we had to find a way for the machines to process complex patterns of more than two meters in length and reduce the myriad colors in a genuine leopard skin down to a maximum of six while retaining a “genuine” look.

<sectiontitle>Has this program made an impact on women’s empowerment in these communities?</sectiontitle> Traditionally, men are the ones hand-stitching the authentic cat garments, as this is part of a high-risk illegal poaching, tailoring, trading and smuggling industry. With the introduction of the legal Heritage Furs, which are softer, a sewing machine-driven tailoring process was required. We were able to empower local women to learn and practice this craft, which can also be used to create traditional clothing and school uniforms worn by the community. <sectiontitle>What impact has this had on leopard populations?</sectiontitle> Panthera invests heavily in the ongoing monitoring of leopard populations in order to assess the impact of our various conservation interventions, including Furs for Life. In Zambia, Kafue National Park and the surrounding Game Management Areas have been frequently cited as a source of leopard skins. Panthera initiated monitoring of several sites in this area in 2018, the same year that we started distributing Heritage Furs to the Lozi people of western Zambia. We have subsequently seen substantial increases in leopard population density at almost all of these monitoring sites, with leopard densities more than doubling from their 2018 levels. We are currently seeking funding to launch a forensic genetics project that will build up a regional genetic database covering most of southern Africa. This will allow us to determine the origin of illegally traded leopard skins, which can in turn help to better focus the conservation efforts of Panthera.

The Maison celebrated the April reopening of its iconic Melbourne boutique on Collins Street with a series of events dedicated to the city's cultural wealth. Nestled in a historic building in the heart of the prestigious "Paris-End" district, the new boutique provides a precious showcase for the world of Cartier and the Maison's jewelry and watch creations. It pays tribute to a wide range of skills by linking the timeless elegance of Art Deco architecture with botanical references to Victorian gardens.

This fall, Cartier was in the spotlight in Rome with the reopening of the Via Condotti boutique in September and the presentation of High Jewelry creations at a series of events at the Palazzo Italia. The Cartier & Myths at the Capitoline Museums exhibition was also unveiled to the general public. Housed in the Palazzo Nuovo on Piazza del Campidoglio, it featured a selection of creations from the Cartier Collection, set against the museum’s own collections and institutional loans, in a majestic setting of 18th-century marble and frescoes. The event opened with an exceptional evening, attended by ambassadors and Friends of the Maison.

Appearing on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage elements in France, glyptics refers to the art of engraving semi-precious stones in relief or intaglio. In 2010, to preserve this savoir-faire threatened with extinction, Cartier integrated the glyptics workshop of Master of Art Philippe Nicolas into its High Jewelry workshops. The glyptics master thus began working to pass on his savoir-faire to future glypticians. He trained five students before retiring in 2022 and entrusted responsibility for the Atelier to one of them, Émilie Marques. Now under her responsibility, the Cartier glyptics workshop brings this heritage to life while exploring new creative territories using a range of hard stones as well as novel materials such as petrified wood and silicified pine cones.
